We recently celebrated the 10-year anniversary for two of our therapeutic programmes.

In 2009, we brought (then Multi-Dimensional Treatment Foster Care (MTFC) which is now) Treatment Foster Care Oregon (TFCO) and Functional Family Therapy (FFT) to New Zealand. They were brought here with our Kaumātua and members of the Leadership Team to Kahotea Marae, to meet with Kaumātua of Ngāti Apakura and Ngāti Maniapoto to seek their advice and to see if these evidence-based models were suitable to bring to Aotearoa and for their mokopuna.

Happily, the elders agreed and so it was fitting that we returned, 10 years later, to Kahotea to celebrate this special anniversary.

Special guests John Aarons (President of TFCO), Mike Robbins (Model Developer for FFT) and Kellie Armey (our FFT Consultant) joined us from the US for the celebrations. Youth Horizons staff from all over the country came together to celebrate. We were also honoured to be joined by guests from Oranga Tamariki and OzChild.

Reflections, stories, laughs, and kai were shared over the fantastic day, which concluded with two cakes! The wairua was palpable, and the air was full of contemplation, anticipation and gratitude.

Our Pasifika staff group led the thank you’s to our honoured guests. A special thank you to an esteemed Matai from the Samoan Community, le afioga o Tuipe’a Asiava Antonio Tuipe’a for joining us and guiding us through the Ka’alolo gifting procession.

Using these two models, we have worked with over 3,000 young people and their families/whānau. Together, we have achieved some outstanding results. This is an incredible achievement and we are very proud of our staff for the work they have done over this time.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and for the support over the last 10 years of these two programmes. Now onwards to the next 10 years!
