Some of our Auckland staff spent a great day at Hoani Waititi Marae in West Auckland last week as part of their Waitangi@Waititi celebrations. Alongside some of our Youth Service West whānau, a small team of Auckland Operations and National Office staff attended the festival and gave out 1000 cardboard fans, 100 bucket hats, 20 caps, and heaps of splodges of sunscreen to keep the festivalgoers cool and sun safe.
There was an awesome line-up of kiwi bands, dance crews and kapa haka, as well as a huge number of kai and craft stalls. The Youth Service West team had a set up with giant Jenga, a basketball hoop game and a map of NZ to identify Māori place names, all of which kept lots of rangatahi (young people) and their whānau interested and engaged.
The event was Para Kore, meaning no non-reusable or disposable plastics, so we made sure to align our set up and giveaways in line with that kaupapa. We loved hanging out in our community and had a great Waitangi Day in the sunshine!
